Phoenix by MAVnotMagic Phoenix by MAVnotMagic
Prints now available! Please let me know if there is a particular product you would like that I did not enable.

Gift for my martial arts teacher, Ricki, as a "swift recovery" present. She just under went hip replacement surgery and is doing quite well.
She's been a very big inspiration to me through out most of my life and one of the reasons I went back to the study of the martial arts.

I'm sure you can see one of the many meanings in the painting.

Detail shot:

Medium: Oil on canvas
Time: atleast 9 hours

Edit: Finally was able to present the painting to her two days after she got out of the hospital. She absolutely loved it but is having a bit of a dilemma as to where to hang it.

I think it's great that she wants to use my painting as inspiration. You can also let her know that I am willing to do a custom design for her for free. Either way, all I ask is that she send or link me pictures of the finished tattoo.

Good luck!

the background with the black is awesome, but the typography near the bottom it's so :P maybe some more work on that to make the piece shine ^_^

The black and the wording at the bottom aren't actually part of the painting. But yeah, I can see what you mean. Thanks for commenting!

well in fact, it's the second wriitng, grey one, with your name on it... the o and e inverted, but it's true they are actully like that in your name. I just hadn't noticed it was that that was written on it

Whoa. You have some major talent. This is a gorgeous piece of work. I absolutely love the intricate designs and their detail. I also love the colors you blended here. I can't believe you did this all in paint. Everything in black is so finely detailed. I would probably have suspected some kind of an ink to catch that detail, or would have to use something like ink to do it myself more so. It takes some real talent to have that much control with that kind of sharp detail work using paint. Great job.

Thank you so much for your comments! I think that's the longest I've gotten for this work, it's really appreciated. And you are definitely right about the control, my hand was still shaking a week later. Made for an interesting time at the AP test. ;-) Thanks again!

What a thoughtful message for your teacher! You're saying 'rise again from your bed of ashes,' or something along those lines? :) Cool!

The remarkable detail here has already been commented on by several people, but I'll add my words that it's pleasant to look at and almost mesmerizing with all those curves and dots and shading...The color scheme works very well considering the fiery theme, and the composition attracted my eye right away. I think that intricate little loop on the phoenix's tail is my favorite part about this whole piece, that and the sleepy-looking eye!! Beautiful piece, definitely worthy of much more attention. :D

Thank you for such a kind review. Indeed the intended message was to overcome the obstacle and rise again as a new person when life knocks you down.
I think you're the first person to comment on the many eyes I put in the piece.

Quite lovely. The use of detail and folk-style designs and movement adds real character to the image. The colour is rather impressive and seems to make the figure become part of the background, thus a dream-like feeling. Bravo.

HOLY CRUD, this was done with paint?? :faint: :faint: Now that's what I call damn impressive!  This is one of the most unique phoenix designs I've encountered here on DA, and so elaborate as well... *stares* the intricate swirls and details are incredible, and there's no way in hell I could attain the right artistic vision (or patience XD) to design a phoenix in this way. :D Everything about it is beautiful, but I'm especially drawn to the head profile which looks so regal! ^.^ This was a very thoughtful gift as well, and your teacher is very lucky to be able to display a phoenix in her home! (Hee hee, I'd have no trouble deciding where to put it - right over my bed! ;)) Gorgeous stuff, and you've definitely done the phoenix incredible justice!
