This is my quarter long project for ARCH 417: Special Topics in Digital Drawing. You probably remember these concept pieces that I posted last quarter: [link] and [link]
This is the final version. It was exhibited in Gould Hall, University of Washington, on June 7th as part of the final review for the class. As you can see, there were some major changes to the project between winter and spring quarters. I felt that the piece would be easier to work with if I were using traditional media as opposed to digital. The original project was a full color comic book, however my decision to use washes limited me to black and white, which incidentally accentuates the contrast between the white of the lightning and the black of night.
The final print size of the piece is 4" X 54" and meant to be read as a scroll. Unfortunately, viewing this on a computer screen robs you of an integral part of the experience because it's 5,383 pixels wide. I'm not making that number up. That's why this has a preview image. But if you are interested in obtaining a full sized print of this for FREE (well, except for postage) please note or email me and I will see about getting you one.
Exhibition Description:
This is the completion of a project begun in ART 131: Drawing for Motion. The story follows the crew of an intrepid sailing ship as they attempt to capture the elusive lightning serpent. The project is an exploration into our perception of comics in the absence of pages. The original painting was created using ink wash, scanned and assembled digitally and printed using an ink jet plotter.
Mediums: Chinese calligraphy ink on plotter paper, Sakura Microns and Photoshop 5.5 & CS2
Time: at least 20 hours, I didn't really keep track
Special Thanks to:
Martin, for the concept
Awesome!Kat and Awesome!Jessica, for putting up with my late nights and being all around awesome roomies.
OUGL Commons, for the paper and printing.
